Why it makes a good gift
Best for : A toddler or preschooler who is starting to stack and build, or a child who already has a toy box full of plastic
Best occasion : Christmas, as a main gift for a one- or two-year-old or as a stocking stuffer for an older preschooler
Why it works : Wooden blocks have no batteries and no instructions, and 100 pieces in four colors and nine shapes leave room to build towers, bridges or anything else. The box with a carrying handle makes tidy-up easy for parents. A 4.8 rating across more than 28,000 reviews at about $14 makes it one of the safest first building gifts here.
Avoid if : The child is old enough for detailed construction sets and would find plain blocks too simple. Check the age marking on the box before giving it to a baby.
