Why it makes a good gift
Best for : A toddler who keeps reaching for a parent's phone and needs a toy of their own
Best occasion : Christmas for a toddler, a stocking gift or a birthday add-on
Why it works : Toddlers want to copy the phone they see adults use all day, and this one lets them do it with pretend calls, voicemails and emoji. Behind the pretend play sit real number buttons and counting games from 0 to 10. A 4.7 rating across more than 17,000 reviews at about $13 makes it an easy low-cost gift for a child who likes grown-up gadgets.
Avoid if : You want a toy with no electronic sounds, or you would rather not give a toddler anything shaped like a smartphone. Plan on buying fresh AAA batteries, since the included ones are for demo use only.
