Why it makes a good gift
Best for : An active toddler who needs to burn energy, from a parent or grandparent wanting a Christmas gift that gets the child moving
Best occasion : Christmas morning, or a toddler's birthday
Why it works : A hopper gives a toddler something to climb on and bounce along on, which suits a child who is more interested in moving than in sitting with a toy. The listing says it helps with balance and motor skills and works indoors and out. A 4.7 rating across more than 26,000 reviews at about $36 is a strong record for an inflatable ride-on.
Avoid if : You want a toy that is ready out of the box: it has to be inflated with an air pump (check the listing for whether one is included), or you have little floor space, since it needs room to bounce. This version is a girl-themed horse design.
