Why it makes a good gift
Best for : An 8- to 14-year-old who likes building and taking things apart, from a parent or relative who wants a hands-on gift with no screen
Best occasion : Christmas, a birthday
Why it works : A mechanical hand is a more unusual build than the standard robot or car kit, and the finished piece moves, so the child has something to show off. The listing says all parts are included with a lifetime supply of replacements, which removes the worry about a lost piece. A 4.6 rating across nearly 4,000 reviews at about $30 is a solid record for a wooden kit.
Avoid if : The child is under 8 or prefers quick, no-assembly toys. It is a DIY build that takes patience and a following of the manual.
