Why it makes a good gift
Best for : Someone who is curious about music and would like to try a small instrument before committing to a guitar or keyboard
Best occasion : Christmas, or a birthday gift for a relative who likes music but has never bought an instrument
Why it works : A kalimba is played with the thumbs, so the person can pick it up and start plucking notes the day it is unwrapped. At about $30 it stays a modest gift, and a 4.8 rating across more than 15,000 reviews suggests buyers are happy with it. It suits a music-curious kid, teen or adult equally, which keeps the choice simple when the age range of the recipient is wide.
Avoid if : The recipient wants to learn a mainstream instrument such as guitar or piano, or wants something to play in a band: a kalimba is a small solo instrument.
