Why it makes a good gift
Best for : A Star Wars fan aged 10 or older, kid or adult, who likes building a model and then keeping it on display.
Best occasion : Christmas or a birthday for someone who already loves the saga.
Why it works : R2-D2 is one of the most recognizable droids in Star Wars, and this set makes it more than a statue: the head rotates 360 degrees, the third leg detaches and the periscope and tools attach. The Darth Malak minifigure, plaque and stand turn the finished build into a display piece. With 4.9 stars across more than 2,700 reviews, it is a low-risk gift for a fan.
Avoid if : The recipient is not a Star Wars fan or dislikes long builds, since 1,050 pieces take a while to assemble. At about $80 it is also a real splurge compared with a small set.
